Facelift Recovery Time in Korea: A Week-by-Week Timeline

Quick answer: Most people are socially presentable 2 to 3 weeks after a facelift, but the face keeps settling for 3 to 6 months. Swelling peaks around day 2 to 3, visible bruising fades within 2 to 3 weeks, and final scar maturation continues for up to a year. The exact timeline depends on which technique was used — a mini lift recovers faster than a deep plane or SMAS facelift.

Quick summary

Milestone Typical timing
Peak swelling Day 2–3
Drain removal (if used) Day 1–2
Suture removal Day 5–10
Bruising resolved Week 2–3
Return to desk work Week 2–3
Light exercise Week 3–4
Full exercise Week 6
Swelling largely settled Month 3
Final result and scar maturation Month 6–12

Day 1 to 3: the swelling peak

Expect the most dramatic swelling and tightness in the first 72 hours. This is normal and not an indication that anything has gone wrong. If drains were placed, they usually come out on day 1 or 2. Most clinics ask you to sleep with your head elevated at roughly 30 to 45 degrees and to avoid bending forward.

Pain is typically described as tightness and pressure rather than sharp pain, and is usually controlled with oral medication. Sudden one-sided pain with rapidly increasing swelling is the one symptom that warrants an immediate call to the clinic — it can indicate a hematoma, which is the most common early complication and is treatable when caught quickly.

Day 4 to 10: sutures out

Swelling begins to move downward and often looks worse around the jaw and neck before it improves. Sutures in front of the ear are usually removed around day 5 to 7; those behind the ear or in the hairline may stay until day 10 to 14.

Numbness around the ears and cheeks is expected at this stage. It results from small sensory nerve branches being stretched during surgery and typically resolves over weeks to a few months.

Week 2 to 3: back in public

This is when most patients feel ready to return to desk work and casual social contact. Residual swelling and some firmness remain, and makeup can usually be applied to camouflage bruising once incisions are closed and dry — confirm the timing with your surgeon.

If you are traveling to Korea for surgery, this is why clinics generally advise planning a stay of at least 10 to 14 days post-operatively, so that suture removal and the first follow-up happen before you fly home.

Week 4 to 8: firmness and irregularity

Tissue under the skin remodels during this period. It is common to feel firm ridges or lumpiness along the cheeks and neck, and for the face to look slightly asymmetric as swelling resolves unevenly. Most of this settles on its own. Light exercise usually resumes at week 3 to 4 and full exertion at around week 6.

Month 3 to 12: the final result

By month 3, roughly 80 to 90 percent of swelling has resolved and the result begins to look natural. Scars continue to mature for 6 to 12 months, fading from pink to pale. Sun protection over the incision lines matters throughout this period.

What changes the timeline

Technique. A mini or short-scar lift involves less dissection and typically shortens the visible recovery by about a week compared with a full SMAS or deep plane lift. A neck lift or combined procedure extends it.

Combined procedures. Adding eyelid surgery, fat grafting, or laser resurfacing lengthens the swelling phase.

Smoking. Nicotine constricts small blood vessels and is the single largest modifiable risk factor for skin healing problems after a facelift. Most surgeons require cessation for several weeks before and after surgery.

Age and skin quality. Thinner, less elastic skin tends to show swelling longer.

This article is general information about surgical recovery and is not medical advice. Recovery varies by individual and by technique. Follow the instructions given by the surgeon who performed your procedure, and contact your clinic directly if you have concerns about your recovery.

FAQ

How long until I look normal in photos?

Most people are comfortable in casual photos at 3 to 4 weeks. For an important event, plan at least 3 months.

When can I fly?

Many surgeons allow short-haul flights at around 10 to 14 days, after the first follow-up. Confirm with the operating surgeon, as this depends on the procedure and your individual course.

Is numbness permanent?

Usually not. Sensation typically returns over several weeks to months. Small patches near the ears can take longer.

Can I speed up recovery?

Sleeping elevated, avoiding salt and alcohol, not smoking, and following the clinic's post-operative instructions are the measures with actual evidence behind them. Lymphatic massage is offered by some clinics but should only be started when the surgeon approves it.

How long does the result last?

A facelift repositions tissue but does not stop aging. Results commonly last 7 to 10 years, with the neck often showing change earlier than the midface.
